Let us introduce you to Cat Johnston, we had a chat with her about her work and what she is up to at the moment:
Tell us about you and what you do?
I am an illustrator and also a model maker. I draw lots of animals and patterns and I like building strange monsters and gods.
Tell us about your hand pin and pendant?
I cast them out of resin and then hand sand and paint them. The fingernails are painted with real nail varnish. I threaded most of the beaded tassels of blood while I was watching Tales Of The Unexpected. It seemed appropriate.
What inspired you to make the hand pin and pendant?
I originally made them for a an exhibition I had at Concrete Hermit a couple of years ago. The severed hands were part of a diorama of the apocalyptic finale of a miniature war I had made. Then someone said I should turn them into jewellery…
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m planning another solo exhibition – I’ve just started building the first characters. I also want to do a lot more drawing.
Last but not least, what are your thoughts on affordable design?
I think people are tired of the same big shops everywhere selling the same things. It’s nice to get a chance to find something new. But it’s hard to start out selling a new product because most shops put such a massive mark up on the price. That’s the good thing about Poundshop – they don’t take a high commission so the designers can sell their work at an affordable price without working for sweatshop wages. I think that’s pretty rare.
