Today we are introducing Dicky Bird, another of the designers selling in our very special W+K window from this Thursday.
Tell us about you and what you do?
I studied Graphic Design at The London College of Printing (now LCC) and worked in Graphics for 10 years. My love of bold colours and simple shapes led me to illustration and, later, the creation of Dicky Bird. I started doing it properly 2 years ago, but it was years in the planning in my head! I’m into nature, 50s and 60s patterns and textiles, Dick Bruna, Japanese life, Mid-century design and all things Scandinavian.
Tell us about House & Garden tea towel?
The Tea Towel features a variety of objects you might find around your house or garden – it’s a simple as that!
What inspired you to make House & Garden tea towel?
I was really excited by the idea of printing my designs on a different material. I like the way that the slightly rough texture softens the graphic shapes.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’ve been doing some repeat patterns for a well-known high street store – but that’s top secret!
I’m working on some Notebook designs and also creating a gaggle of strange but interesting Dicky Bird characters.
Last but not least, what are your thoughts on affordable design?
Price should not be a barrier to good design, but I think you have to accept that something cheap is not going to last a lifetime and invest wisely.
I like Vitsoe’s philosophy – ‘Living better with less that lasts longer.’
