I am Manchester based maker who uses stitch and paper to create geometric inspired work. I studied MA Textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University, specialising in Embroidery. I love experimenting with embroidery and colour, both influenced by a trip to South America. My current work explores line, shape and colour.

The cards made especially for The Poundshop are suitable for any occassion and left blank inside. They could also be framed to hang on the wall.

3.What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently working a new series of framed pieces which will be on display in Manchester in October. There will be a combination of larger and smaller works and also a new range of cards. I also plan to return to using fabric to make a range of cushions and bags.

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

My Favourite £1 buy is a green ceramic jug I bought from a junk shop. I use it all the time as a flower vase. It currently has some lovely orange roses in. I love ceramics and would love to collaborate with a potter one day.

1.Tell us about you and what you do.

We are BARABR — Sandra and Beatrice Barth — a Leipzig based duo operating in the field of graphic design, illustration and art direction. We are two sisters that started collaborating while studying System-Design at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.
We both have a strong interest in working with people and the role of design in social environments such as workshops and events in museums or public spaces. We also share a love for film and filmmaking.

2.Tell us about your submitted product.

We like visualizing music for artwork and also engaging people in our work. Here we combine both: we ask the user to find a visual expression for sound. What does this sound look like? is a sticker sheet with various coloured shapes for a mask that reflects a sound provided in an internet link.We ask the user to send us a picture of himself wearing the mask. We upload it to our website where we collect all masks for all participants to have a look at.

3.What are you working on at the moment?

Sandra is taking part in a masterclass for documentary film where she is making a movie about a training course. Beatrice is working on band merchandise.

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

A cheese plate with a cheese cover that look like a cheese on a cheese, probably a piece of Cheddar on a piece of Edamer.

1.Tell us about you and what you do.

I studied Graphic Design at The London College of Printing (now LCC) and worked in Graphics for 10 years. My love of bold colours and simple shapes led me to illustration and, later, the creation of Dicky Bird. I started doing it properly 2 years ago, but it was years in the planning in my head! I’m into nature, 50s and 60s patterns and textiles, Dick Bruna, Japanese life, Mid-century design and all things Scandinavian.

2.Tell us about your submitted product.

The Pocket Mirrors are a great little product. Small but useful – and with a nice empty space waiting for a Dicky Bird design.

3.What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve done some interesting collaborations recently. A children’s Alphabet in Welsh, some sticky tape designs – and I’m currently working on some ideas to go onto fabric.
When you work alone, it’s great to link in with other people!

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

I love any stationery-related products! Pencils, tapes, envelopes, rubbers, paperclips…the list is endless.

1.Tell us about you and what you do.

I make models, drawings and collages, mainly inspired by folk art and childhood memories and occasionally nightmares.

2.Tell us about your submitted product.

The limb jewellery started out as part of a solo exhibition I had a few years ago. I made a miniature war with scenes that were a bit like theatre sets. There were 3-dimensional models of part man/part animal soldiers and flat pieces of scenery. The beaded limbs appeared in the final apocalyptic scene of strewn body parts.

3.What are you working on at the moment?

Apart from casting lots of new hands and threading more beaded gore for Poundshop in my studio, I am also beginning to plan a new solo show. It’s going to be a giant doll’s house full of strange residents.

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

I found a massive mosaic crucifix with a tiny photo of a grumpy looking pope in the middle in a charity shop. I can’t remember how much it cost, but I think it was about a pound. I can’t find it now though and that’s making me very, very sad.

1.Tell us about you and what you do.

I am an artist and illustrator based in Peckham, South London. I graduated from Camberwell College of Arts 1 year ago and have since been working freelance as well as on collaborative projects with Day Job Studio, a multi-disciplinary illustration collective.
There are two main strands to my practice, one is illustration in a fairly traditional sense, often editorial or narrative paintings. The other is ceramics which I approach more holistically as they are often arrived at without a brief. Crucially my ceramics come from the same place as my my illustration- playfulness, communication and social awareness are at the core of my practice, whatever the media.

2.Tell us about your submitted product.

I have produced a series of necklaces with ceramic pendants which are playful and contemporary while being different to anything on the high street, and still cheap!I have used traditional cobalt pigments on while clay to allude to the willow pattern and my far-eastern ancestry, exploring and subverting notions of the historic craft.

3.What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a few illustrations and ceramic commissions at the moment, and with my studio on a few events such as Elcaf, V&A Lates, and our own group exhibition which will be in August.

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

I once got a Street Fighter T-shirt from eBay for £1 which I was really happy about! That was definitely one of my best £1 buys. But pound shops are also a really good place to get burger sauce, (massive bottles) and cool socks! I got a pack of Hot Wheels socks that say ‘Winner’ on them- I feel very majestic in them.

1.Tell us about you and what you do.

Hana and Hasmita are close friends who’ve grown up together in London’s East End. They work on card designs, portraits and paintings, commissioned through their website. They’ve always been interested in all things art, design and making which translates as Hana is a recent BA (Hons) Architecture graduate, and Hasmita is a BA (Hons) Illustration graduate. They are very often discussing ideas and inspiration for their work with each other, and both appreciate the value and experience different design disciplines can offer. One of their favourite things to do in London is to explore the buzzing design places, take in current exhibitions, events, talks and get involved in design opportunities in London. They are elated to be taking part in The Poundshop for the second time!

2.Tell us about your submitted product.

Rolled Paper Pencils are the first product Hana +Hasmita have produced together, so they are thrilled to get to experiment and build confidence in their designs at low cost and with little risk in an event like The Poundshop. The pencils are hand crafted from brightly coloured sheets of paper, rolled tight and glued around 2mm HB clutch-pencil leads. Different colour combinations and angular shapes result in fun, snazzy almost psychedelic patterns, which give that everyday tool a little extra energy that might just translate into what you draw with them!

3.What are you working on at the moment?

Following on from Rolled Paper Pencils, Hana + Hasmita are working on a range of unusual paper products including paper earrings, weaved necklaces, brooches and bracelets utilising origami techniques. Hana + Hasmita are upcycling: reusing sari material to make unique purse designs and recycling scrap paper for a special range of Rolled Paper Pencils!

4.Last but not least, What is your favourite £1 buy ever?

Hana + Hasmita can’t decide between:
Impacted Earwax from The Hoxton Street Monster Supplies…gross but yum!
A little wooden box, with a ladybird inside that wobbles like it’s alive when you open it!
A wind-up torch, that you can wind with just one hand; small and powerful!

A set of two necklaces inspired by the navajo patterns laser cut into laserite and attached to a bronze chain. The laserite is a material similar to the acrylic. It comes with a goldish finish on the front and is black on the back. The thickness is 1mm and is very resistant.
