Say hello to Elaine Burke the lady behind KHAMA.
Tell us about you and what you do?
I am an Accessories Designer specilasing in ethical production methods and micro enterprise projects. Working with community groups to create these products.
Tell us about Not Made in China Purse?
This purse has been made by our women’s community group from recycled material from our main production site in a small village in Malawi. The fabric is called Chitenge and usually worn by the women as a wrap skirt. This we use to make into bags and the off-cuts into small accessories.
What inspired you to make Not Made in China Purse?
The poundshop inspired us to make this! Creating something affordable using up the old off-cuts of fabric.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am working on expanding the business and setting up a new workshop in a different area of Malawi. We are putting the cycling backpack into production now – so we need more women to make this.
Last but not least, what are your thoughts on affordable design?
I think good design and ethically produced products should be accessible to everyone.
