Meet Lucille Clerc we chatted to her about bits and bobs and her thoughts on affordable design
What do you do?
I am a graphic designer and illustrator living in London. I work mainly for clients in other creative fields (fashion, textiles, publishing, etc). My work is hand-made incorporating illustration, graphics and old printing techniques. I like to mix the elements of craft together, but I am always trying to push them to a high level and hopefully give them a contemporary context.
What about the notebooks?
The Notebooks are CMYK hand printed. They are silk screened covers and end papers with blank pages inside. There are two variations of the cover made from a mix of print tests and bits of holiday sketches, photos and postcards.
Inspiration?
I wasn’t able to take any holidays this year and these notebooks are my way to compensate for that by creating a stay-cation. Usually when I go on holiday I prefer to take a notebook with me and I like to think that these would be the notebooks for a made-up holiday that never happened.
I imagine that it is time to decide where I want to go this year, up to the mountains, or down to the beach? Altitude or Latitude? So these notebooks are for all my fellow stay-cationers out there.
What are you working on?
I recently finished the design and illustration of a new book for Laurence King Publishing and Magma on fashion looks that is to be released in January, 2013. Currently I am working on a promotional installation for the launch of textile designer Suzanne Goodwin’s new collection. I am creating a “vertical garden” collage out of hand printed elements based on Suzanne’s textile swatches. Come see the Green Wall at Tent this weekend, September 22nd-23rd.
Thoughts on affordable design?
Affordable design is probably the most challenging thing to do at the moment. To create something that is affordable but retaining a high level of craft is a very tricky balance. However, it is the most satisfying thing to achieve when you manage to pull it off.
