Meet Miguel Melgarejo, here he talks about his thoughts on affordable design and what he is up to at the moment.
Tell us about you and what you do?
I am a Mexican designer living in the Netherlands. Used to design products now focusing more on services and strategies.
Tell us about your bookmarks?
I developed the bookmarks while I was playing with a laser cutter at a place I used to work. I used them first as a gift for friends, people started to fancy them and the company to make them. Now they have been for sale around.
What inspired you to make your bookmarks?
I was thinking about how easy is to leave a book forgotten at a desk; I wanted to create bookmarks that attracted people to get back to their reading. The idea was to bring part of the story to the physical realm, that’s how the concept was born.
What are you working on at the moment?
I just graduated from my master at Strategic Product Design in the Netherlands working with the TU Delft and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Now I am looking for job opportunities in Europe in the fields of service design and strategic development. Exciting times!
Last but not least, what are your thoughts on affordable design?
Affordable design is nice and necessary; everyone deserves to have objects and products that enhance their life. Now, we as human beings tend to assign more value to things that we cannot get or afford, asking in a way for things to have a certain price to consider the “designed by” tag (for example) to be significant.
So, sometimes we as consumers are the ones that make affordable design non-affordable.
