Let us introduce you to Nazareno Crea, he is a designer who believe that being concise and appropriate is the best way to create affordable design.
Tell us about you and what you do?
I am an artist and designer, my work is a blend of High Culture and Low culture,
I create visuals that always contain contrasts in language and form.
Tell us about Alfa Magazine and Viewer’s Digest?
ALFA Magazine is a project of about fifty pieces of work belonging to art history, that in their period represented female beauty, and today are being retouched accord- ing to nowdays beauty standards. The selection was made between paintings representing female figures that have challenged and provoked the aesthetic of their age. Each painting has been postproduced with technics that nowdays are being operated in fashion photogra- phy, advertising and periodic publishing. Using photoshop as a pallete and the mouse as a panel the retouched artwork preserves its initial purpose, to present ideal beauty.
V’s D is a closed series of 5 newspapers (LVX, MORI, QVEO, DOCTA and NOX) that analyses and interprets a selection of copyright free images via their transformation and editorial articulation and whose aim is to create a rhetoric for the contemporary image.
What inspired you to make Alfa Magazine and Viewer’s Digest?
They are both self-initiated projects, derived from studies on the contemporary use of the photographic image in our daily visual culture.
What are you working on at the moment?
I constantly shift from pragmatic design projects to self initiated visual enquiries,
at the moment I am working on a book in collaboration with artist Edward Fornieles and writer curator Dean Kissick. On a facebook sitcom created by a group of USA campus students.
Last but not least, what are your thoughts on affordable design?
I believe that design is always a consequence of an affordable solution to a complex problematic, so I think that in theory all outcomes of design are affordable. The context might vary and the notion of affordable as well is a relative notion too.
What is important in the end is the right balance between the initial question and the final outcome. In general I believe that being concise and appropriate is the best way to create affordable design.
